Stop by the garage!

Finally got most of the half-scale garage done on the outside. Oh, there'll be some changes or additions, I'm sure, but it's about done! Yeah, I know - it's a far "prettier" garage than usual. haa! (*click photos for full size.)

I decided to do egg carton stones with moss for the driveway and the walkways, something different for a change. Now I keep looking at that big blank space above the big garage door. It seems so empty. What do you say? Add some signs or not?

Yes, it's not the "typical" garage, but I can't help myself. Unless I do it really dirty and abandoned, it's gonna look "livable." 😉 I do have a lightpost I might add, but I'd have to move that square planter with flowers. But it does need some kind of light outside.

Since it takes up a bit of room, I decided to put the tire rack outside. I liked adding the vintage gas station signs for some character, and gotta have an old gas pump. This may seem "busy," but I've actually seen some garages in real life with this kind of yard decor. (But I like busy!)

I like the green with the yellow ochre color. I seem to use that green a lot. (Wedgewood for the walls; Hauser green for the window frames.)

Continuing on around to the back - I added some old "license plates" on the back outside wall. It seemed to need "something" (and it covers a seam!) The inside is still messy and being sorted out. I'll hang some plates in there, too, of course, like real life. Yes, there is a washer in the garage so he doesn't have to take his dirty work clothes upstairs.

Here's the other side of the garage with the shuttered windows. I added a meter, which was fun to make, and hung a water hose, too. Thought this was the perfect spot for the dumpster since he can go out the back and around.

Had to share as I came across this neat 3D printed electric box and meter kit (see link below) which I almost bought and then I started thinking, hey, I can make something like that. So I did!

 It's just a wood rectangle, a thin slice on top, then I cut the refill from an ink pen (make sure it's empty!) for the pipe. Painted it all with a nice Chalk Gray paint I found marked down at H. Lobby. The dial is simply a shrunk down meter printie topped with a round slice cut from the crystal pen tube and a punched out plastic circle. Worked great! Fun to figure stuff like that out.

 I also added some signs, weeds, and flower boxes. The hose is bits and pieces - some painted cloth wire, a bead, a cut spring, and the end cut off a plastic lug nut wrench for the hose nozzle. 

I'll show the inside later when I add more stuff in. Got lots of cans, boxes, tools, etc. to get in there.

 The rest: I dirtied up the walls slightly, added vintage signs, and yeah, I couldn't resist putting in window boxes.

 Hmm, I think this side might need a few more clumps of moss on the roof. I might have to dirty it up more, too. Just a bit. I didn't want a really decrepit garage. ha! (I did pass by a really dirty real-life work garage recently. Boy, so much old junk and rusty stuff. A real mess. (And the worker looked like he needed to hose off outside before he went home.) I just didn't want to go that far.

Miniature Garage Book Nook Done

  I originally bought this garage nook kit (PlayfulMario/Amazon-ou, 164 pieces, out of stock) a while back as I thought I'd use some of the items in the half-scale miniature garage I've been working on. (*Click photos for full size.)

Well... as is sometimes the case, it didn't turn out that way. I started working on it and it was a quick, easy project. Changed a few things, added a few things, and got it done in three days. I decided I had enough for the other garage so I kept this mostly as is. (I'm working on landscaping for the actual garage.)

I did change the name as I didn't like the original one (with no apostrophe, which would bug me forever!)

There are some weird spellings on things as I really look at it. I will  change that roof sign slightly as it bugs me, too. (Made that F an E.)

My version:

Went together pretty well though it was a bit hard getting the sides in place. I did have some trouble with that wall portion for the hanging hook but got it to work. I still can't get all parts of the roof down but I'll leave it. I just hope I don't have to change the batteries in a long, long time. ha! (The AA battery box is hidden in that gray wall on the top corner; kind of a bad idea since the roof is in two sections and then you'd have to take it off.)

I had to add some dirt and oil spots as it was too clean! Put in a few tools, too. I actually enjoyed working on this one.

Miniature Attic Update

 

I know, shockingly I've mostly stuck to one project for awhile, except for finishing details on the half-scale garage, and since this is smaller, I got the structure done pretty quick!  (* Click photos for full size.)

Found some great paper in a scrapbook wallpaper pad for the small half-scale attic kit that fit perfectly. The whole thing came out better than I expected!

The foor was cut from a wood placemat and painted. The design doesn't really show once painted and will be covered with "stuff" anyway. I use these a lot as they're great wood. I glue it to a cardboard base and then pull out all the connecting strings between the boards.

The fake wall on the side with the door was all glued on a piece of card cut from a box. 

I glued textured paper on the sides and back. The roof turned out pretty well using strips cut from a piece of layered cardboard and painted. 

Did get a few of the vintage game boxes made (thanks to miniaturist J Star for the boxes that I shrunk down. ** See his attic video for inspiration.

Still digging around to see what to put in there... I'll add things as I find them. Maybe this can fit on the top of a house or something as an extra secret attic storage space. We'll see.

Lighting the Half-Scale Garage

 

Let there be lights!!

Making progress! I've been poking around, losing things, searching, all that fun stuff, but finally - finally - got the lights in! (The bottom floor really isn't as blue as this; photo didn't use flash.) (*Click photos for full size.)

The top floor uses two large chip LEDs, with a battery holder that will be hidden under the (not shown) sink. Pretty bright! The wall will be added on the left side. I'm leaving it so it can be removed if needed.

Fluorescent lights

Ta-dah! I'm really happy with how my faux "fluorescent" lights came out! Look pretty real, huh? I don't think anyone has done something like this before, unless they're the working expensive variety.

The garage workspace has faux "fluorescent" lights using the crystal plastic tubes from Bic pens (the pen end is cut off). I used a string of 10 lights from the Dollar Tree. The string is spread out with half of the lights tucked inside each tube, with the wire left between the two tubes. It's attached to a cardboard folder with a chain glued on to look like the light casing.

The rest of the wire going to the battery box is covered with a painted thin straw (thanks for the idea Gigi!) and glued to the wall to look like conduit. The battery box (see full view photo above, right side) is hidden behind the cabinet, made by glueing vintage plastic cabinet doors on the front (actually the back side of the battery box) and a wood counter on top. I covered the side with cardstock, leaving the switch open. The box is held in with Velcro, so I can remove it if I have to change the batteries. And figured out a cool solution for an electric box.

A motorcycle and "motor" I found. I was going to chop the motorcycle up for the parts ("chop shop" garage? ha!) But it's kind of too nice to wreck... for now. But have to see how it looks in there size-wise.

Getting some of the signs up and deciding where things go. I'll show the garage again when everything is in and set up. Have to put all the boxes, etc. inside and finish furnishing the top floor, though I found more printie boxes I might have to do! Then I am adding a bit more "dirt"  but I'm holding back... I don't want it "too" dirty... or it'll be turned into an abandoned garage! I have a base to cover and put stuff around on, too. An!d I just made a fun addition for it. It's only a garage, but I keep thinking of things that should be in it!

After this, besides the tiny attic project I mentioned earlier (I just found the perfect paper for it!), I think I'm ready for a more "girly" project again. Maybe I should work on the Raggedy Ann house. I really should. It's ready to have lights put in and be papered. I haven't dressed any dolls in a while, either. Could be fun transforming some tinier dolls. Am thinking on that... We'll see...

Small Half-Scale In-Between Project

June already? Figured I'd better post something! 

Had some other issues to deal with so I got sidetracked on the blog and projects. But while I finish up the half-scale garage (Wait'll you see! The lights look great!) and decide on what's next, I saw a post on Facebook that gave me an idea for a small project I'd set aside.

Half-scale attic "box"

A while back, I bought a small (very small) half-scale attic kit. (5 1/4" h at peak; 5" d, 4 3/4" w.) I thought it was cute and nicely made. Figured I'd eventually set it on top of a house or something, but I didn't have an idea of what to do with it. (*Click photos for full size.)

When I saw a slightly spooky attic project posted by miniaturist J Star in the World of Dollhouses and Miniatures Group on FB I got an idea. (Note: I'm not sure if the links go through if you're not a FB member or grop member  - but see the video below for ideas!)

Here's one of the game printie boxes on FB. Love vintage items! I am going to shrink these down close enough for half-scale use. Not super tiny, as I really don't like to make things too small. 

Thes games are so cool-looking that I might use the full size printies in a library room I've been thinking of and setting things aside for. One of the few 1" scale projects I'd do as I have a really interesting CD box set aside I might convert for that thoiugh I have a larger cabinet box set aside, too. We'll see which one seems better. I'll share all that later when I do that project. Yes, so many projects, so many ideas!!! Try to keep up! haaa!

The drawback for the attic, of course, is I'd have to build book shelves (not my favorite thing to do) but it'll look really neat when done. It'll probably look better if I make false walls and shelves on the sides, too. More work! The best part is the filling it, of course, when I get to that point.

I do love attics in dollhouses as that "catch-all" space. Here are a few attics I've done and shared in a past post.

Day of the Dead Miniature Nook

 

While work and finishing up on the half-scale garage is still ongoing, I finally finished the last few steps on the Plaza de Los Muertos  - (Fsolis/Amazon) Day of the Dead (or technically Plaza of the Dead) Book Nook.

All the colors and the skeleton figures attracted me to this one. I was going to put in some actual skeletons but didn't see where, so I skipped that as the figures they provide are rather cute. But I did add more 3D effects like flowers, pots, and all kinds of skulls on the visible side. 

I had to take some leeway as I couldn't fit the plastic on because of my non-flat additions, so a piece of plastic cut from a binder pocket insert worked well, especially since it is a bit flexible.

I also used a piece of thin acrylic cut from a poster frame front to fit the front of the nook. I've used that plastic before to make cheap dust covers for other dollhouses.

Update 2: Half-Scale Miniature Garage

 

Shower in and kitchen area

Working away on the Half-Scale Garage's second floor living space. (See last post. Here's the garage front and interior so far.) Getting there!

(*NOTE: I wish there was a way to get updated posts to alert viewers. But? New pix coming shortly: the bath is done; the shower is done! Yes, still working on the *&^ lights!)

It may not look like much so far, but it took a lot of fiddling to get to this point with the shower in and where the kitchen should sit (more or less). (*Click photos for full size.)

The extension is on (the kitchen area.) I'm thinking of not gluing the small roof on (not shown here) since it fits snug and it makes it easier to get inside if needed. Just have to glue and paint the shingles. (Yay, strips that came with the house!)

I decided to use the striped paper on the large side wall (at left not shown) so it would match, and this may not be glued either as I really don't like the limited opening from the back. We'll see... And fiigured out the shower and bathroom, so far. The shower isn't perfect but it's reasonable enough using a corner cut from plastic packaging, wood trim, and beads for the shower head and knobs. (I see I need to fix that side wood strip. I always see things after the photos. ha!)

Trying to figure out how to add the other smaller brick wall to left so I can put a  rod and a faux "folding door," that way I can remove the full ceiling/side wall if needed. 

Got this 3D bathroom set (had to dirty it up!) by Blackthorn Miniatures/Etsy or on FB. They have some fun spooky items, too.

Have to get the lights attached next. 

I did have two larger square 5.0 mm MEGA LED lights (Like this on Evan Designs) that are pretty bright and work on 2 AAA batteries (1.5 v each = 3 volts). That should work on this floor. I have two left but will have to get more of these as they really are very bright. I switched out a smaller battery pack from a kit since it'll be small enough to fit under the sink then so I can hide it. That's a pain but I don't always light these up much anyway.

Came up with a good idea for the garage. I'm putting in fake flourescent ceiling lights using clear plastic pen tubes (below) and card stock. Then I came up with a good solution to hide the battery box -  I cut the rest of the orangey plastic sink cabinets to paint and glue to the front of the battery pack. That'll be hidden under a wood counter so it looks like built in cabinets but will be removable. The string itself can be covered by a painted straw and attached to the wall.

So far, so good! I know, not too exciting but it gives some ideas for adding different things if needed. On to the lights next time.

More of the Half-Scale Miniature Garage

 Still working away here and there, but I am making progress on the Half-Scale Garage since the last post. 

It usually takes a bit until you get into a project, and I like how it's progressing now. The back wall and front window is in. I had the idea of making window shades (as shown in the extension wall above) from the wallpaper I'm using and I like how they turned out. Simple to do: just fold in half, cut a toothpick on top to fit inside and crease to give it a "rolled" look. Then add trim to the bottom.

** Update since I posted this: got the floor in, working on window trim and trim around staircase opening. Then I can get the extension glued on. Should be able to show all that soon.

Since I changed the windows and they jut out a bit, I had to build up the trim. Easy enough to do by adding a small 1/8" square stick along the edges in the back. You then glue the trim next to the window frame with that edge on the outside, top, bottom, and sides.

I'm probably using the textured paper painted a light gray for the other walls. The main window wall and other side use the same wallpaper as the shades.

I changed my mind on the floor and went with a green textured paper since it seems to go with the project. Funny as I'm not a fan of green, but I do like the Wedgewood green which I've used on two other houses. I also added the slightly darker green that I used for the Lavender house kitchen cabinets for the outer door/window trim. It seemed to be a good combination with the yellow-ochre doors.

Now that I'm making such progress, I started looking on Pinterest for other things to add. I found some good auto parts printie boxes and some food boxes. Here's some old car art - garage signs. - car mag covers to shrink. The apartment space definitely needs some frozen dinner boxes, meat trays,  cola and beer cases, plus I thought of making some pieces of chicken and a chicken bucket for a take-out dinner. Maybe I'll add some fries or potatoes to that. So that'll be fun to make up some groceries (cereal boxes) in a bag, too, that I can set on a counter. 

Yes, even a teensy beer can and a KFC drink cup.

If you've never visited this very useful printies site, PaperMau, there is a detailed tool box set pattern to download. Didn't try it yet, but it looks like you have to enlarge it to size. There are all types of paper printies there (buildings, etc.) so be sure to look around.

While this probably won't be used in this project, I also made a small sink/hutch (Vintage Kitchen Cabinet/CastleCrafts.) I decided to add some "tile" (the metal liner from a coffee can) and put faucets (I took off something else) on the back wall. It came out pretty nice.

I'm still thinking of adding a small bathroom so have to see where I can fit it. I'd like to build a couple walls and add it upstairs in the apartment space if I can. Once I get the 3D printed set I bought, then I can ee howfigure out what to buld. There actually is more space upstairs than you'd think, even with adding a bed and I have to fit in a couch and TV yet, but I think it'll  work. I might even put in a second table that the resident uses to put together small parts while watching TV. 

 I do have a lot of extra doors so it would be easy to build a bathroom space and add a door or maybe make a faux folding door with corrugated paper since it would require less room. I just have to figure how to set up the light string to light the room, that space, and I'm hoping to add a lantern outside using the last light on the string. I have to figure it out yet. 

So far, so good! Lots of figuring to do yet but it's getting there!

Update: Half-Scale Garage

 

Garage - so far. Actually kind of cute, huh? Still needs some touch-ups, etc.

Hope you enjoyed the A to Z posts, or rather for me, A to V. ha! 

Now I thought I'd share what else I'm doing. I mentioned getting the garage kit out before back in January(!) and then put it away again (1/24 Lansdowne 1-car garage/Laser Dollhouse Designs) as I really couldn't get inspired on it. Then I got it out again and put it away. Well, third time's the charm!

Truthfully, I still wasn't really "feeling" this project until, finally, I got the floor glued and started putting windows in. Now, it's starting to look like something!  (Click photos for full size.)

I changed the windows from the working windows to these with the faux shutters. It works since I have the shutters on the one side. I might put some window boxes too. I like flowers!

The big obstacle here was the staircase, (to be added in yet; just set in here.) It had these fancier cut spindles, which are nice, (similar to the spindles on the Lavender House porch but smaller)  but seem out of place in a garage. So I'll save them and instead cut smaller sticks, which were something else to get to stay in! Finally, finally, I got the railing glued and while it's not all perfect, it's fine. It's a garage!  The main thing is it fits right, that's after I had to do some cutting on the door and window trims.

You have to build this in steps otherwise some things will be too hard to get in right, as I learned after not putting the sliding door into the rails first... had to pull one partway out to get the door in right. Should read directions! ha! But... it works!

I did something different here as I thought it had way too many windows for a garage and to me, I thought it needed a full wall to use inside.

So, I covered the two window spaces on the outside with shutters. I like how that looks. The inside has different, yes, larger shutters, but the wall will be covered with tables in front of it and maybe a work bulletin board, some maps, shelves, etc. And junk piles. ha!

 It looks like a garage! It's actually a pretty ingenious design. Stairs need to be installed yet. I papered it with textured "spackle-look" wallpaper and painted the walls to give it a used-dirty look. I have to add lights on the ceiling yet, fake "flourescent" lights using a light string and clear plastic tubes cut from pens. (See below.) I hope it works.

The upstairs has an extension that has to be built. Several pieces to do... I'm at the sick-of-painting stage. ha! This will be a somewhat messy apartment for the mechanic when he's working on things. I hope to somehow fit in a small bathroom and will have a compact kitchen, probably using vintage plastic furniture. Just an old chair, a bed, and a table and chairs. Not much but it's home!

I decided to use this one-piece plastic kitchen cabinet/sink/oven. It was an ugly orange color before.

 Here's how it looks painted with a few "dirty" spots. I made the faucet from a piece of solder and the knobs are cut from the tops of tiny fake Christmas bulbs. I added the counter from a piece of mat board and scrapbook paper The sink was built with a wood box and trim. I I like using these plastic vintage pieces in certain projects. I might use this fridge with it.

I had another kitchen piece (partly hidden on back wall) I used in my Halloween house. I also used a vintage Fridge (on wall by door)  in the Fairfield diner. They're good if you want to dirty something up to make it look old and used.

Possible lights for first floor ceiling. I have some white "holders" cut out also to resemble flourescent lights.

I may figure out a ceiling channel on the second floor and use a string of lights there too. I didn't want to get too fancy on this or have to use a transformer. We'll see what I work up. So far, so good!
