Only four minutes to exercise?

I've done these, tho not in this order and not repeated. Going to see if adding this in for a second daily workout (short - only 4 minutes!) helps in the weight battle... Who can't spare four minutes, right??

Too cute not to share! Baby Hummingbirds Hatched!

Too cute not to share! See the newly hatched hummingbirds in the nest via webcam.

(NOTE: Keep peeking in here and there, or watch a while as the mother will fly off, probably to feed, and then you can see the babies that are beneath her in the nest. Sometimes it takes some lucky timing, or patience.... :>) )

Woof!

I've had dogs all my life. The earliest story I know about me and dogs but don't remember it actually happening, was that I apparerently used to leave the backyard of our Chicago two-flat as a very young kid and push my doll buggy around the block, the dog at my side as protector. That is until Dad, I'm sure, put some kind of undoable lock on the gate.

I grew up with dogs and have always had one as the house just seems too empty when one leaves. So I always get another. It's natural then that I also put dogs in most of my stories, and in my miniatures projects, as well.

So, yes, of course my story in THE CORNER CAFE has a dog! Read the excerpt and share about your favorite dog! (**I am also at Kathy Wheeler's blog today, so go say hello!)

Excerpt from "Perfect Timing" by Christine Verstraete in THE CORNER CAFE: A TASTY COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES:

Gina Mason rubbed her tired eyes and stared at the giant mound of paper covering her desk. She’d opened the TO BEAN OR NOT TO BEAN CORNER CAFÉ because she loved coffee. "Not the paperwork that goes with it," she mumbled.

A sound outside made her realize she should've been home an hour ago. With a sigh, she grabbed her mug and grimaced at the black sludge inside. "Ugh, wonder what the customers would think if they saw my cup?"

Grungy cup in the sink and the lights off, she stepped outside only to find more annoyances. A mass of papers and a bundle of rags littered the steps. Picking up the papers with a gripe, "no one picks up after themselves anymore," she almost shoved the rags aside with her foot when a slight movement caught her eye. No, wait. She had to be seeing things. A minute later, the bundle twitched again and a small white leg popped out.

With a gasp, she reached out and unwrapped the cloths, stunned at the sight of a dirty white and black face. The dog trembled in her arms and stared at her, eyes dull. Gina unfolded the dirty coverings and swore under her breath at the dog's thin frame and terrible condition. Blood spots streaked his face, side and legs. She noticed several small gouges. He looked like skin over bone.

"Oh, poor thing. You’re just a baby," she whispered.

After locking up, she nestled the whimpering pup against her chest and hurried to the car. The dog could barely lift his head as she settled him into the jacket on her front seat and cranked the engine after making a quick call.

Her heart pounded almost as fast as the car's engine as she sped around the corner, her mind full of questions. Who would do this? Why? What if she hadn't been there? She reached out and patted the small bundle. "Dr. Milton will fix you right up. You'll be okay."

THE COLOR OF BETRAYAL: Luke Reiser has every intention of marrying Malia Kane, a difficult feat when she refuses to acknowledge his interest. When Malia’s grandmother asks for a doll left in his attic, Luke believes his luck has changed. He summons Malia to his office, but he doesn’t expect her reaction.

Malia doesn’t have time to do artwork for Luke’s company. She’s preparing for an art show to ease financial difficulties looming like a snuffer ready to extinguish a candle flame. But what she finds at Luke’s office is worse than bankruptcy—it’s that horrid doll bequeathed to her at her mother’s death. Malia has found out the hard way the curse breaks any would-be lover’s nose, and worse. Not wanting to risk injury to Luke, she takes the doll and runs.

Can an ancient doll bring the two together…or will Luke end up next in a long line of victims…with a broken nose as well as a broken heart?

Excerpt of THE COLOR OF BETRAYAL:

“It’s gone.” Seeming oblivious to his presence, her gaze spanned the room before dropping her face into open palms. “It’s old. It’s ugly. Why? Why would anyone want the blasted thing?” She had obviously forgotten his presence as the conversation she carried on was strictly her own. “It’s that damned curse. It has to be.” She raised her head, staring out a window, its sill covered in dust. Her eyes squinted in the sunlight. “Oooh, it would serve him right if he did snatch the stupid thing.” Full lips pressed in a stubborn line had him lusting to trace them with a fingertip. Coax them into a curve.

“Who?” he demanded, but she didn’t answer. Luke decided to take charge of the situation before she completely lost all contact with reality. “What makes you think the doll is cursed? Not that I believe it for a moment.” It felt odd saying it aloud, though the words from the note were carved in his memory.

She shot him a startled glance. Yes, that was surprise covering her features. Annoyed, he promised himself he’d work on forging a less forgettable image later. Right now, however, she seemed to be debating how much to tell him.

Malia opened her mouth to speak, and suddenly Luke’s brain ceased any rational functioning. A pressing need to kiss those parted lips overtook common sense, and he covered her mouth with his. How much more blatant a signal would he have to send for her to realize his attraction?

Summer Teen Reading Party! Welcome Barb Ehrentreu, author of "If I Could Be Like Jennifer Taylor" and a Boop Collector!

Today I welcome Barb Ehrentreu, author of
If I Could Be Like Jennifer Taylor
.
About the Book:

Carolyn Samuels is obsessed with the idea of being popular. She is convinced that the only thing keeping her from happiness is her too heavy for fashion body and not being a cheerleader. When she is paired for a math project with the girl who tormented her in middle school, Jennifer Taylor, she's sure it's going to be another year of pain. Carolyn is blackmailed into doing her math homework and Jennifer takes on Carolyn as a pity project since she can’t be seen with someone who dresses in jeans and sweatshirt. Then Carolyn learns Jennifer’s secret and lies to her own friends to cover it up. Will Carolyn become a cheerleader and popular, or will she be a target of this mean girl again?

** I'm also at Barb's blog today talking about THE CORNER CAFE & my other stories. Stop by! **

What is your writing background?
I have written poetry for years and had two short stories published online. One is a children's story published on Story Station and the other is an adult story on Moondance.org. I have a Masters in Reading and Writing, K-12 and taught 17 1/2 years as well as being a Literacy Specialist.

What inspired this story?
My daughter was going through a period when she started being bulimic and she also felt bad about her body. There were a few books written from the POV of a person who had an eating disorder, but there were none about knowing someone who had one. So I decided to use this and wrote my character without an eating disorder who finds that this perfect girl for whom she had this love-hate had this problem.

Share your favorite line from the book.
Worse luck, I have to do it, not as the slender blonde beauty in my dream, but as the real Carolyn Samuels with my brown curly hair hanging like shriveled spaghetti, mud brown eyes, and a body too large for fashion.

What do you hate about your character?
Moving the blanket up to my nose, I say, “Mom, I can't stop
shivering, and my stomach and head hurt.”
She feels my head and looks at me with mother vision. “Carolyn,
did you think I'd fall for your tricks?”
I cringe. Now my stomach and head ache for real. Defeated, I climb
out of bed and get washed. I slip the hated outfit onto my body and glance at my bloated reflection in the mirror. It's too late to change. I’m stuck with this. If only I could be like Jennifer Taylor.

She is whiney and doesn't want to face her life. At the beginning of the story I don't like her at all.

On the opposite side, what do you like about your character?
I love how strong she is and how she manages to keep such a dark secret from both her parents and her friends.

When I'm not writing, I collect...
Okay, here is my secret. I love Betty Boop and collect the dolls in all sizes. I have them above my desk actually. I love anything Betty Boop and even had jeans with her on them. I also collect and love pictures and figures of lions. That makes sense, since I'm a Leo. I wear a lion's head around my neck.

Excerpt:

If I Could Be Like Jennifer Taylor - Free Chapter

Chapter One
I spot him walking toward my locker with a small box in one hand and a plastic fork in the other. My Crush! He hands me the box, and I open it. Inside is a piece of luscious chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. I look up into his blue eyes and give him the box so I can touch his cheek as I smooth his dark hair.

“You always know just what I like.”

He smiles and feeds me a forkful of cake. I don’t have to worry about eating it because I can eat anything I want and not gain weight. He places the cake box in my locker so he can put his arms around me.

The first bell rings in my ears. I ignore it because I’m thin and blonde and floating in the arms of my dark-haired crush. The other cheerleaders run up to us laughing and kidding around, and I’m about to speak. The ringing gets louder.

The dream evaporates, and I realize it’s the darn alarm piercing my sleep. Slamming my fist onto the snooze button, I get this nagging feeling. Then I remember. I have something to do. Worse luck, I have to do it, not as the slender blonde beauty in my dream, but as the real Carolyn Samuels with my brown curly hair hanging like shriveled spaghetti, mud brown eyes, and a body too large for fashion.

I see my new book bag is packed and ready by the door with the initials C. S. in blue, my favorite color. Suddenly it hits me, and I get this dizzy let-me-plop-on-the-pillow feeling. Freshman year of high school— first day. My brain is ready, but my body isn't. Jennifer will be there. Math class and Jennifer; gym class with Jennifer. My body curls into a fetal position, and I throw the covers over my head. Don’t faint Carolyn, I tell myself, panting.
